As a new school year got underway in Kirkwood this week, district officials took time to highlight some of last year's accomplishments.

The district recently received news from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regarding its annual performance report, and student scores on the spring 2012 MAP test and end-of-course exams - and Kirkwood schools rank among the top schools in St. Louis County.

Most notably, Kirkwood High School's graduation rate is 97.4 percent, which is the highest graduation rate in the school's history, Kirkwood School District Superintendent Tom Williams said.

"We're very proud of that," Williams said at Monday's school board meeting.

The district is also proud to be ranked among the top St. Louis County schools based on its test scores. On the MAP test in communication arts, Kirkwood ranked number one in grades three and four, number two in grades five and eight, number three in grade seven and number eight in grade six.

In mathematics, the district ranked number three in grades four, five and six, number four in grades three and seven and number five in grade eight. In science, Kirkwood ranked number two in grade eight and number four in grade five.

Students scored high on end-of-course exams as well, and the district received a perfect score on the state's Annual Performance Report, which includes 14 accreditation standards that cover measures such as test scores, attendance and graduation rates, ACT scores and other academic indicators.

"We're very proud of these results," Williams said. "Our students and teachers did a great job."
