RISE attends the WBGO Kids Jazz Concert Series at Montclair Art Museum

RISE with Harpist, Brandee Younger

On Saturday members of RISE attended the WBGO Kids Jazz Concert Series at Montclair Art Museum. The children had the pleasure of listening to the sounds of Coltrane, Negro Spirituals and children ballads played by the guest musicians. They listened to the beautiful sounds of Ms. Courtney who has been playing the piano since the age of 5; Ms. Brandee who played the 48 strings, 6 foot tall harp; and then the bass, played by Mr. Dezron, has been playing the instrument since the age of 7.  This ensemble lead an educational sing along of Negro Spirituals for the children and through musical examples demonstrated the historical ties between the spirituals and jazz.

Recently the children were given a lesson on the Instruments used in the Bible and this was a perfect follow up for them to see the evolution of the stringed instruments that were played by our forefathers.

“Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings,” - Psalm 33:2

  1. Wow!!! What a great experience for our children to have. We definitely need to understand the gift of music given to us by our Father, and the fact that our forefathers played all types of instruments. What a great lesson. Thanks for sharing
