While watching the evening news my wife Theba and I came aware of a local farm that allowed customers to come and pick their own strawberries. Our oldest daughter Michal loves strawberries and we thought it would be very educational for her to not only see where fruits come from but to take part in the selection process.
Early in the afternoon on the scheduled day, Michal, Elisheba (youngest daughter),Theba and I all got in the car with plenty of water for the hour long drive to rural South Georgia. It was warm and partly cloudy day which made great weather for picking strawberries. When we arrived at Southern Belle Farms, we noticed the rolling hills covered with produce and grazing cows. As I got out of the car, a gust of wind made it apparent that we were now on a farm. On the way to the strawberry fields, Michal pointed out small farm animals. When we got to the strawberry fields, we saw little green shrubs with red dots that covered the earth like a blanket.
After a few instructions from a farm staff, Theba and Michal started picking strawberries while I directed the search for the best ones. Elisheba was nestled safely on my chest in a baby carrier. She looked very happy and I believe that she would have loved to help pick strawberries along with her sister and mother. Theba helped Michal select the best strawberries and after about twenty minutes we had a bucket full of plump strawberries. Later that evening, we had strawberry shortcake made with fresh, sweet strawberries. We had a nice day and would like to visit another farm to select the food we put on our table.
