What should my 2-3 year old be doing

The Basics

Children are now learning about the world around them. They do not understand the concept of math, language arts or science. Everything they see and touch can become an opportunity for them to learn math, science, social studies and language arts. Take them for walks in the park. Pick up objects like leaves, feathers and rocks. This can be a science lesson and a math lesson, where they might learn the concept of “big, bigger, and biggest”. This time is also perfect for children to learn more about things they may enjoy looking at or playing with like trucks. Read books to them about trucks. Use these things to teach them about shapes, colors, and letters. This is when children first start their relationship with learning.

Below are some things to do at home for Language Arts developement:

At this age parents should introduce the alphabet to their children on a regular basis, until mastery.

• Place the alphabet in children room or make one area a study area in the home.

• Purchase or borrow (make a copy) of the alphabet song. This should be played at home and also in the car whenever possible.

• As children master the song, they should then be introduced to each letter individually, insuring that the child is able to recognize each letter.

• Make this a fun activity for the child, for about 5-10 minutes intervals throughout the day as you play with the child.

• Read to your child on a regular basis and as part of their nightly routine. Follow along reading with your fingers and have child point out letters you think they might be able to recognize at some stage.

• Try to incorporate the alphabet whenever possible with other activities.
