Is a college education really worth it?

I'm 19 and currently work part time. Everyone has told me that I need to go ahead and get a college degree, but I have to wonder....is it even worth it?

There are so many people who are having a hard time finding a job even with a college degree. I'd hate to attempt to spend even a dime on something that's not going to actually benefit me any more than a job that I already have.

Then, to top it all off, the only major I feel that I could actually graduate with and not fail anything is English....what people label as the most useless major.

All I want to do is read, write, travel the world, and learn new languages. I want a career that pays enough for me to comfortably rent an apartment in a safe neighborhood of a major city. Yes, it's true. I don't want much from life.

But what's the point of breaking my neck to accumulate a large quantity of material things when I can be just as happy with simplicity?

  1. College is worth it. For one thing, being a graduate on a resume is more pleasing to see rather than someone that ended their education at a high school. It also shows you are able to complete higher achievements. Unless you want to stay at your job for the rest of your life, having anything to help increase your chance of getting a job is always good.

Another thing is that college education is not just about getting better jobs, its your chance to LEARN about tons of stuff. You can always try majoring in business, there you can learn about finances and others. Even though you say you dont really want much from life, learning about new things is always fun and can make your life more enjoyable. Although you can just learn without college/classes, it may take a longer time and its better to do it now when you're young rather then if you want to do it in the future when you already have a set career, family, etc.

So my answer is yes, college education is worth it. Its not about the money, its about what you get from the education that will help you in the long run.

  2. A college degree educates you not only in a field but rounds you out as a person. Get together with a group of people and discuss any subject and you will be able to tell those that are educated. You perceive the world differently.

  3. A college education to me, whether at an ivy league university, to a community college, to a trade school, gives you choices. It makes you more marketable. Yes, some people with college degrees are out of work, but the majority of today's unemployed at those without a degree. Look at the stats Israelite PRIDE has posted thus far regarding the earning the potential of those with a degree compared to those without. Its a big difference. To me education gives you options, you have choices and it does make you look at the world differently. No matter what you choose to do it life, you need training and you need to know what your doing.

Your an English major and being an English major isn't a bad thing at all. You can parlay your love of the written word into any career: journalism, broadcasting, law, teaching, business, etc. Since you like to travel so much, maybe you can use your degree to become an editorial writer for a travel magazine or publishing firm.

    You shouldn't limit yourself.
