Why Is Education So Important for African Americans?

One reason is that unemployment rates fall as educational attainment increases.  In other words, the more education you have, the less likely you will become unemployed at some point in your life.  Look at the numbers:  In 2009, the unemployment rate for African Americans 25 years and over without a high school diploma was over 21 percent, while the jobless rates for high school graduates and those graduating with a bachelor’s degree and higher were 14.0 and 7.3, respectively.

  1. Another good reason why we as parents need to teach our children about the importance of going to college. By the time a child starts first grade, they should know we, as parents and a nation, expect them to finish high school and get a college degree.
